Air India lobbies to use airspace over Chinas Xinjiang as financial woes mount

With Pakistans airspace closed to Indian carriers, Air India is asking the government to seek access to a route over Hotan in Chinas Xinjiang to shorten long-haul flights. The airline says detours have raised fuel costs by up to 29% and could impact profits by about $455 million annually, making some U.S. routes unviable without relief. Gaining access could trim losses by over $1 million a week, though Chinas military control of the region poses hurdles.
